Scottish Enterprise is looking for the next generation of leaders for rural Scotland with the launch of the 2009/10 Rural Leadership Programme.  firsteclipse will deliver leadership and coaching for this programme over the next two years.  To date the programme has helped over 125 key business personnel from across rural Scotland become more effective leaders and enhanced their business performance. The objectives of the Rural Leadership Programme are to enable rural leaders to lead more effective organisations and act as ambassadors for rural Scotland.  With sharpened communication skills those completing the programme not only enhance agricultural and rural representation but participate in the creation of better public policy for agriculture and rural Scotland.

Scottish Enterprise is looking to recruit 45 applicants who demonstrate a progressive attitude and the potential to enhance their leadership and networking skills.

According to Scottish Enterprise Project Manager Julia Latto, “Over the past three years, the Scottish Enterprise Rural Leadership Programme has helped to develop the future leaders of Scotland’s rural economy, providing key individuals with a set of leadership tools and the confidence required to grow their business and contribute to the wider rural economy. These leadership tools are vital in helping Scotland’s rural businesses to address the challenges they are facing and in helping to sustain a successful rural economy in Scotland."

SAC project leader Iain Riddell believes, “The programme represents a fantastic opportunity for anyone working in the rural sector.  They can enhance their business and the role they play in the rural community.  Whether you join the programme unsure whether you have “leadership capability”, or join with extensive business experience and directorships, the result is increased confidence and effectiveness.”

Past programmes have seen participants recruited from a wide range of rural sectors including agriculture, tourism, forestry, horticulture, banking and tourism.  The aim is to continue to encourage applicants from across the rural sector.  Experience suggests they will find it worthwhile.

“The programme was a fantastic medium to meet like minded rural business managers and learn from each others experiences and strengths. It taught us to work inside the farm gate but think outside the farm boundary.”  Charlie Russell, Estate Manager and Factor Glenapp Estate, Ayrshire.

“The programme made me more confident and also gave me a good understanding of Scottish institutions and government which has undoubtedly helped with my policy work.  I am better at lobbying, networking and advocacy which means the British Horse Society is an even more effective organisation in Scotland.”  Helene Mauchlen, Scottish Development Officer for The British Horse Society.

The emphasis will be on building life and leadership skills. Scottish Enterprise believes those completing the course will manage better businesses and rise to take lead roles in organisations representing the rural economy.
